Editorial Reviews:

Product Description
Take the guesswork out of making perfect rice with this easy-to-use rice cooker. The handy appliance offers an 8-cup uncooked-rice capacity and can produce up to 16 cups of cooked rice at a time--great when gathering with friends or cooking for the whole family. Simply add dry rice, measure in the water, and turn the unit on. Once the rice has fully cooked, the appliance automatically switches over to keep-warm mode, which maintains an ideal serving temperature without over-cooking. In addition, the unit's see-through glass lid keeps in heat and moisture and makes it possible to check on food without releasing steam, while its dishwasher-safe nonstick cooking pan makes cleanup a snap. Other highlights include "cook" and "warm" indicator lights, steam vents and a condensation catcher, a stay-cool lid knob and side handles for comfortable transport, and a modern-looking design that will look nice on any kitchen counter. A rice scoop that stores on board and a measuring cup come included. The rice cooker measures approximately 10 by 10 by 8 inches and carries a one-year limited warranty.

    5 out of 5 stars It's Good!   July 25, 2010

This cooker is pretty good. It cooks fast, and is very easy to clean (residue does not stubbornly stick to the surface and washes away easily). I have used it for probably six months or longer now without experiencing any serious issues. But, I have to agree with one other reviewer here. It leaks out water badly through the lid and makes a mess on the counter. With that being said, however, I must add that it also depends on much water you use. If you use the right amount of water for the right amount of rice, it does not leak. So, the whole point if leaking is a moot point. But, it still does make the lid very messy after cooking the rice. I don't know why, especially when I have used another Black & Decker earlier and that never made a mess on the lid. At least not like the one this does.

So, to sum it up, this may not be an excellent rice cooker. But, it is very good. And compared to many others out there, this one is damn good. I have used Aroma which leaked badly started building up some kind of spongy material on the lid. I had used another one before that, an unbranded one, which just died one day. This was within two-three months of use. It just didn't turn on. With Black & Decker, I have never experienced any such problems. And it is a hell of a lot easier to clean a B&D cooker as opposed the previous ones I have used. So, this cooker is very much worth buying. Giving it less than five stars would be unfair because this has proven better than anything else I have used.

4 out of 5 stars Good size electric rice cooker.   May 23, 2010

After reading other reviews before purchase I learned I should follow the cooking directions on the rice package, not the recipe book. I have success with white and brown rice. For fluffy rice be sure to stir with the provided paddle at end of cooking, before leaving the rice to stay warm. Wash brown rice to avoid the boil over that can occur, which is messy to clean up! I cook less rice than this cooker claims to be able to cook. I don't think you could successfully cook the capacity claimed without boil over. I love that everything goes in the dishwasher for easy clean up.

This cooker makes reliably great rice, and rather quickly. I have no complaints about its ability to cook rice. The problem is that it spews hot, starchy slime all over the place. It makes a gigantic mess. It's not worth it.

This model makes exceptional and easy rice. But whoever the idiot was that decided it needed a carb (hole) should be reprimanded. Previous models with a bubbling lid worked just fine and avoided having a starchy mess all over your counter and floor area. I suggest lining the surrounding counter with damp towels, and one on the floor as well before turning this messy machine on.

4 out of 5 stars Good rice, but kind of messy   April 16, 2010

My Salton rice cooker finally gave out after 8 years of use, and I replaced it with the Black & Decker Rice Cooker Plus. The good points are it is quite easy to use and can cook rice quite well. The disappointment to me is the cleanup.

Having used the Salton, I am accustomed to the starchy steam these types of cookers produce but I find this cooker to be messier than my Salton was. It "spits" all over its top, handles and even the surrounding coutertop are and floor (I have to line with paper towels to catch some of the sputter). I've tried rinsing the rice first and the performance was the same.

It is a big plus that the rice container itself is nonstick, but the lid takes some scrubbing, not just a light wash. I suppose this is a good value for the price I paid (under $30), but I think I may be upgrading soon to avoid that sticky mess.
