4 out of 5 stars Love it!!   July 14, 2010

I got this breadmaker on a whim. I came to Amazon to read the reviews after I bought it and got a little worried because of all the negative ones. I've made a few loaves now and they've all turned out GREAT!! A lot of people have complained about bread not turning out correctly, but I think it's the person's doing, not the breadmaker (I've followed a few recipes I have found online and in the book it provides). Keep in mind, I've never made bread before and never even used a breadmaker, and this one seems to work great for me.

The only issue I have with it is that the shape of the pan is a little awkward and makes the loaves tall. Also, sometimes after taking the loaf out of the pan the kneading device leaves a giant hole on the underside of the bread. These aren't TOO big of issues for me, though, because I am not making bread for looks.

Like I mentioned, I don't have any other experience with breadmakers, but I do recommend this one if you're a newbie like me! :)

5 out of 5 stars Takes the mess out of bread making   July 6, 2010

I started using this machine as instructed by the manual, made a few loafs of different types and enjoyed the results; however, after feeling more enthusiastic about bread making, and reading about artisan breads, european breads (for my european wife), etc, I started using the machine for the mixing of the ingredients, the first rise and the first and second kneading only. It does all the messy work keeping my hands free to do other things, and after the second kneading, I take the dough out of the machine and knead it myself in a wooden dough bowl I brought from South America and use for this purpose only.

I can make artisan breads with really good results, shape them any way I want, etc.

I do not use the doug setting in the machine as it does not provide any heat while mixing or rising, I use the bread settings but stop the machine when I take the dough out to the wooden bowl.

4 out of 5 stars Steep learning curve but love it now   June 28, 2010

I bought this when my 12-yr-old Panasonic's paddle froze. Its replacement bucket was $2 more than this breadmaker that had a 58 minute loaf and jam/jelly option. The simple orange marmalade recipe turned out so well it was gone in 3 days instead of the week I'd planned. I agree with other reviews that bread is hard on the sides and think that's because of the heater coil around the middle. The Panasonic didn't have that coil but it also took over an hour longer to bake. I used that one, and this one, as a handsoff doughmaker and am pleased that it takes 1 hour less time in this one. I was not happy with my first 4 loaves but found the water quantity in all recipes needs to be bumped up a bit (found this by using my Panasonic recipe in this breadmaker) and I use a little less less yeast since it rose so much it hit and coated the lid. Really like: dough in 90 minutes, 1-1/2 and 2lb versions on all recipes, front light stays on when plugged in to remind me to keep it unplugged when not in use.

3 out of 5 stars Bread tastes ok, but loaf shape is awkward   June 14, 2010

I don't like the shape of the loaves it produces - compared to a standard bread loaf, the loaf is a little too tall in height and a little too short in length. Maybe this happens with all bread makers, I don't know because this is my first one, but I was surprised to discover I need to dig the blade out of each loaf. Removing the pan from the machine when baking is done is tricky. After a few loaves came out with patches of 'pastry dough like stuff' sticking to one side or another of the loaf, I learned that it is helpful to coat the interior with a cooking spray. We've made whole wheat, sourdough and challah - all have tasted good - certainly better than store-bought packaged bread - but honestly, not quite the same quality as when I've made these breads using conventional methods (and yes, that's taking into account the changes one makes to a recipe when one is cooking with a bread maker). This bread maker does save time in preparation, kneading and cleaning. I would recommend this bread maker to someone who prefers home made bread but has limited time for baking and cleaning up.

The recipe booklet contains a country french loaf, it is spectacular! Try it before store you try bought bread machine baking products!
